Ex-Elburn firefighter charged with stealing from the district

A former Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District lieutenant has been charged with stealing from the district.

Greg M. Algrim, 45, of the 800 block of North First Street in Elburn, has been charged with 14 counts of felony theft and six counts of misdemeanor theft, according to a news release from the Elburn Police Department and the fire district.

It alleges that between July 2019 and July 2021, Algrim falsified scheduling and payroll records, resulting in his receiving unearned pay. The Kane County state's attorney's office alleges $19,000 was taken.

After the district learned about the theft of funds, Algrim was placed on paid administrative leave while the authorities investigated. He later resigned, according to the news release.

The district's board of trustees approved a separation agreement with Algrim on Dec. 7, 2021, according to minutes from the meeting. The terms were not listed.

Bail was set at $10,000, and Algrim posted $1,000 at the Elburn police department Tuesday and was released. He is due to appear in Kane County court March 1.
