Homeless man charged with stabbing another on Pace bus through Vernon Hills

A 51-year-old homeless man was charged with attempted murder and other offenses after a passenger on a Pace bus traveling through Vernon Hills Thursday night was stabbed multiple times.

Errol O. Shakes also was charged with aggravated battery with great bodily harm and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, according to Vernon Hills police. He's being held in the Lake County jail on $1 million bail, police said.

The 58-year old man who was stabbed also was homeless, police said. He was stabbed multiple times and sustained significant injuries but was stable and recovering at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

Libertyville police responded just after 8 p.m. The stabbing occurred while the bus was traveling south on Milwaukee Avenue between Greentree Parkway in Vernon Hills and Gregg's Parkway in Libertyville, authorities said.

Vernon Hills police said the initial investigation showed the stabbing occurred primarily in their jurisdiction.

According to police, Shakes and the victim were acquaintances, but it was unclear how well they know each other. There was pushing, and a struggle occurred before the man was stabbed, police said. They did not say what prompted the attack.

Two or three other passengers were on the bus but were not in the immediate area of the struggle. Shakes got off the bus but remained in the area as police arrived, authorities said.

A knife used in the attack was recovered at the scene, police said.

Anyone with information regarding this investigation should call Vernon Hills police at (847) 247-4891.
