Sweet homecoming, 'Chicago': Glenbrook South's annual parade returns with a local theme

Glenbrook South High School homecoming queen Lily Davis gave parade spectators a royal wave from the back of a vintage Ford Thunderbird convertible on a delightful sunny morning Saturday.

Last year, the school hosted a stationary homecoming event on campus due to COVID-19. Since then, pandemic restrictions have eased somewhat, particularly for outdoor events, so the parade returned to a traditional route, eastward along Glenview Road, between Shermer Road and Jackman Park, in downtown Glenview.

"It's really special having everything like back to normal," Davis said. "Everybody's really happy about it."

Cheerleaders, the Glenbrook South marching band, poms and various school clubs and organizations were intermixed with floats from each class, which followed a "Chicago" theme. A "Titan's Day Off" float by the freshman class included a mock-up of the red car from the "Ferris Bueller" movie, the sophomore float was decorated with a rendition of Wrigley Field's marquee, juniors had Navy Pier with sailors, and the seniors had a Chicago Bulls float that included an animated Michael Jordan silhouette dunking a basketball.

Groups of spectators lined Glenview Road, and around 100 people were gathered to watch the parade near the end of its route downtown.

Davis was honored to have been voted homecoming queen.

"I feel so special," Davis said. "I'm really happy.
