West Chicago 2021 Art Banner winner announced

Chicago-area artist Linda Schmitt has won the People's Choice Award for West Chicago's annual Art Banner Exhibit, which had the theme of "Take Flight" for 2021.

According to the West Chicago Cultural Arts Commission, Schmitt received the most online votes in the People's Choice poll. Schmitt's watercolor painting of a heron titled "Taking Off" was among 23 original works of art transferred onto vinyl banners and installed on Main and West Washington streets from May through September.

"I love seeing the community engage with the art by commenting on their favorites online and around town, though the overwhelming feedback often is 'It's so hard to choose,'" Cultural Arts Commission official Heidi Kuahrich said.

Schmitt will be honored at a future city council meeting, where she will be presented with her award-winning banner by Mayor Ruben Pineda and representatives of the Cultural Arts Commission.

The theme for the 2022 Art Banner Exhibit has been announced as "Renewal." For more information on when artwork submissions begin, visit westchicago.org.
