Prairie Path closure in downtown Wheaton expected to last several months

A section of the Illinois Prairie Path in downtown Wheaton will be closed to pedestrians and bicyclists beginning Monday.

Crews are completing work associated with the fourth and final phase of a downtown streetscape project.

A detour is expected to be in place for several months while a portion of the current path is removed and replaced.

The path will be closed between West Street and Reber Street. The detour will direct Prairie Path users going east to this route: south on West Street; east on Willow Avenue; and north on Reber Street back to the path.

Prairie Path users heading west will take this detour: south on Reber; west on Willow; and north on West Street.

People who are running or walking can use the sidewalks on the detour route. Bicyclists should either ride on the street or walk their bikes on the sidewalk starting on Willow Avenue. The city prohibits biking on sidewalks downtown.

Drivers are asked to use caution and look for bicyclists and pedestrians in the area.
