Hotel tax expanded in Mundelein to include online bookings

Reservations at Mundelein hotels and motels made with online travel companies now will be assessed a 5% village tax, just like reservations made directly with the companies or through brick-and-mortar travel agencies.

Short-term apartment, condominium or housing rental reservations made online also will be assessed the 5% tax.

The village board unanimously approved the change Monday night. The proposal was put forth because not taxing all reservations the same puts some businesses at a financial disadvantage, Mayor Steve Lentz said.

"This corrects that," Lentz said.
