West Chicago joins tree initiative

West Chicago has joined with the Plant Trees for Communities' initiative to plant at least 340 new trees in the Chicago region in 2021.

The initiative aims to build a healthier urban forest and is spearheaded by the Chicago Region Trees Initiative. It involves the seven-county Chicago region and all 50 Chicago wards.

This spring, a redbud tree was planted adjacent to the Fox Community Center in West Chicago. The ornamental tree has magenta buds, which turn into clusters of pink blossoms. They stay in bloom for approximately two weeks, before green heart-shaped leaves emerge.

"We're proud to be doing our part to build a healthier urban forest in our corner of DuPage County," West Chicago Mayor Ruben Pineda said in a statement.
