Former leader of Keshet, Abbie Weisberg, dies at 57

Abbie Weisberg, for 31 years affiliated with Keshet in Northbrook and its chief executive officer from 2005-20, died April 26.

Mrs. Weisberg, nee Hoffman, who died of cancer at 57, started as a Sunday school teacher's aide and teacher at Keshet, 610 Academy Drive, which provides services locally and internationally to individuals with disabilities.

She rose to become director of Keshet's Sunday school and director of recreational programming before assuming overall direction of the organization.

In 2011 Mrs. Weisberg was among Jewish Women International's annual "10 Women to Watch," honored at a gala in Washington, D.C.

A graduate of the University of Illinois with a master's degree in nonprofit management from the Spertus Institute of Jewish Learning and Leadership, she lived in Evanston with her husband, Dr. Mitchell Weisberg. She was the mother of Zoie (Josh) Berman, Shayna Weisberg and Sophie (Elan) Yudkowsky.

Mrs. Weisberg also is survived by a brother, Michael (Susan) Hoffman, and sisters Laurie (Lonnie) Ungerhoff and Debbie (Randall) Gelb.

A service was held April 27 at Chicago Jewish Funerals Skokie Chapel, conducted by Rabbi Ari Hart of Skokie Valley Agudath Jacob. Interment was held privately at Memorial Park Cemetery, Skokie.
