Harper to freeze tuition for second consecutive year amid pandemic

Harper College will freeze tuition for the second consecutive year, coupled with other financial relief measures to help students, in light of the pandemic's economic impacts.

The college's board of trustees Wednesday night unanimously agreed to keep in-district tuition for the 2021-2022 academic year at $133.50 per credit hour, or $152.50 per credit hour including the universal fee. Out-of-district, out-of-state and international student tuition rates also will stay the same.

"It is our sincere hope that through these actions, we may provide our students and their families with some stability during these uncertain times," college President Avis Proctor said in a statement.

The board also approved four other tuition and fee adjustments, such as the continued elimination of a distance learning fee, and suspending differential, or double, tuition for more expensive courses in health care.

The relief measures are expected to cost more than $2 million. Officials say they plan to utilize funds through reserves and the most recent federal relief package.
