Hatzis withdrawing from Mount Prospect trustee race

Mount Prospect Trustee Eleni Hatzis is ending her campaign for reelection rather than fight a challenge to her nominating petitions filed by the husband of an opponent.

"As a working mom with three children, all e-learning at home, and a full-time career, during a pandemic, I don't have time to spend debating signatures," Hatzis said Thursday. "I will continue to serve the residents of Mount Prospect, but I am withdrawing my petition to be on the April ballot."

Hatzis, who had filed to seek a second term in the April 6 election, said she enjoyed serving as a trustee and believed her tenure was a good example to others.

"I grew up here. I have a passion for this town," she said.

Steven Pissarreck, husband of board candidate Peggy Pissarreck, had challenged Hatzis' petition signatures. Peggy Pissarreck is running on a slate with Mount Prospect Public Library Trustee Terri Gens for one of the three open seats for the village board.

Hatzis was the only incumbent running. Agostino "Augie" Filippone, an attorney who made an unsuccessful bid for trustee in 2019, also will be on the ballot.

The challenge to Hatzis was set to be heard by the village electoral board Friday. The board also is scheduled to hear an objection Friday to the petitions of the Gens-Pissarreck slate.

Mount Prospect voters will have a choice for trustee
