A little trip to the past for 'Back to the Future' - and to help a good cause

A bit of old-school summertime fun has made a surprising comeback at the North Suburban YMCA: The drive-in movie. Featuring the family-friendly film "Back to the Future," the Y will host its first drive-in movie night in its parking lot at 2705 Techny Road in Northbrook at 7:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21. As part of the "Revive Our Y" campaign, there is a $30 donation per car and 70 spaces available.

Spaces are socially distanced, and moviegoers are asked to follow guidelines including wearing a mask when not in their vehicles. All guests will have at least one empty parking spot between them and the next car. Moviegoers can also buy refreshments provided by Sunset Foods and Dairy Queen.

The movie will be projected on a 25-foot screen, and the audio will be available via speakers and on the FM transmitter on any car radio. Drive-in guests will be checked in as they enter the lot where they'll be guided to their reserved spot. There, guests will stay parked inside their vehicles and tune in to the movie's live audio through their radios or listen through the speakers.

Proceeds from the event will go toward the "Revive our Y" campaign, which provides financial aid for families in need, helps with operational costs to keep the Y open, and ensures over 200 staff members stay employed.

"When the pandemic hit and the weather got warmer, we wanted to come up with something creative to bring the community together in a safe and socially distanced way, plus help our Y with the costs of staying open. We're so excited to bring our families together again," said Kathy Fielding, North Suburban YMCA CEO.
