First West Nile mosquito found in Glenview; risk low

The first batches of mosquitoes testing positive for West Nile virus in Glenview were found July 20 and 22.

The North Shore Mosquito Abatement District found positive samples in lab testing July 28 from its traps in Glenview and Niles.

Overall, in 1,059 abatement district mosquito traps sampled through July 27, 35 tested as positive for West Nile. Evanston had 12 positive results and Skokie 5, while no batches from Northbrook tested positive. Positive batches have also been found in Northfield, Glencoe, Kenilworth, Lincolnwood, Wilmette and Winnetka.

Parts of Glenview also are covered by the Northwest Mosquito Abatement District and the Cook County Department of Public Health, whose most recent report listed risk of human West Nile virus as "low."

The mosquito abatement district advises residents to take personal protective measures to minimize bites, mainly reporting or removing water standing for more than five days. To report standing water, call (847) 446-9434, ext. 1008.
