Strange odor causes Vernon Hills building evacuation

Residents of a building on the 200 block of West Court of Shorewood in Vernon Hills were evacuated Monday evening because of worries over an unknown odor.

The Countryside Fire Protection District investigated about 6:20 p.m. but could not identify the odor through electronic readings. Crews and occupants left the building, and hazmat technicians were then called.

After using additional tools, hazmat technicians deemed the odor safe, and crews ventilated the building using electric fans.

Residents were allowed back into their homes as the scene was turned over to the Vernon Hills Building Department.

No injuries were reported.
