Police: Aurora man charged after officers break up illegal street race

A 20-year-old Aurora man faces multiple charges stemming from an illegal street race broken up by police late Friday, authorities said.

Aurora police said Diego Deloera is charged with aggravated fleeing from police and reckless driving, and cited for having a loud muffler.

Police said they were called to the intersection of Lake Street and Sullivan Road on the city's north side about 10 p.m. Friday for a report of an illegal street race about to start. They were alerted to roughly 50 vehicles gathering in the area.

Police said officers saw several vehicles driving east on Sullivan toward Route 25 before a number of the cars crashed into each other.

Authorities said Deloera's vehicle, a black Jeep Cherokee, was spotted making a rapid U-turn, squealing its tires and speeding away from the scene.

Officers initially pursued the vehicle, but gave up the chase as the vehicle accelerated to roughly 80 mph and drove into the oncoming lanes of Lake Street.

Pursuing officers said they identified Deloera driving the vehicle through his windshield and the rolled down driver's side window.

They located the vehicle at Deloera's home a short time later, police said. Deloera was taken into custody without incident. His vehicle was confiscated, police said.
