Burn ban enacted in Vernon Hills area

Vernon Hills-based Countryside Fire Protection District has banned open and controlled burning in its 24-square mile jurisdiction through June 1.

According to Fire Chief Chuck Smith, there are concerns that smoke pollution will make the COVID-19 pandemic worse, as those with chronic lung disease and/or moderate to severe asthma are at higher risk for severe illness from the virus. Smoke and contaminants could exacerbate some residents' respiratory issues, Smith said, and compromise their ability to fight the virus.

The department's resources will be better used dealing with virus-related illnesses rather than responding to open burning complaints, uncontrolled open burns or grass fires, he added.
