Several in custody after man found dead at Crystal Lake recreation area

Crystal Lake police found the body of a 51-year-old man floating Tuesday at the Three Oaks Recreation Area after responding to a 911 call and encountering another person covered in blood, authorities said.

Several people are in custody, but no charges had been filed as of Tuesday night, police said. The unidentified victim and the people in custody were acquaintances and there is no danger to the public, according to police.

The grisly discovery occurred at about 3 p.m. after officers responded to the 6100 block of Northwest Highway after receiving an open 911 call. Officers found three individuals at that location, one of whom was covered in what appeared to be blood, police said.

Further investigation led officers to a secluded wooded inlet on the west side of Three Oaks, where they discovered the dead man floating in the water.

The McHenry County coroner's office will release the identity of the victim when appropriate and more information will be provided when it becomes available, police said.

Police are encouraging anyone with information related to the case to contact the Crystal Lake Police Department at (815) 356-3620. Anyone with a cellphone can send an anonymous tip to the department by texting the word CLPDTIP along with the tip information to 847411 (tip411).
