Pierog wins Democratic primary for Kane County board chairman
In Tuesday's Democratic primary race for Kane County Board chairman, former school board member Corinne Pierog of Batavia headed to an easy victory over Greg Elsbree, a union official from Aurora.
With 93% of precincts reporting, Peirog had 28,007 votes to Elsbree's 11,774.
"I'm looking forward to bringing new ideas based on research and input to develop a new and reinvigorated Kane County," Pierog said Tuesday night, while acknowledging Elsbree's effort and that of her supporters. "I'm 100% committed to running an effective race and doing the homework."
In the general election on Nov. 3, Pierog will take on Republican David Rickert, longtime county treasurer, who ran unopposed Tuesday in his party's race. He was elected treasurer in 1998, and won reelection to his sixth term in 2018.
Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen, a Republican who served two terms as chairman, withdrew his bid for reelection in December, opening the way for a new chairman. This will be the first time since 2012 that voters have a general election with a choice, instead of an unopposed Republican.
Pierog, 68, served two terms on the school board for St. Charles Unit District 303, and is the owner of Sustainable Leadership Solutions, a consulting company supporting nonprofit organizations. In 2012 and 2016 she ran for Illinois Senate District 25, losing to Republican Jim Oberweis in both general elections.
Elsbree, 57, is secretary-treasurer of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters local 179 and has served as chairman of the Aurora Township Democratic Central Committee.
