No bail for 2 men charged with robbing Woodridge gas station

Bail was denied Friday for two Chicago men charged with robbing a BP gasoline station Thursday in Woodridge.

Derrick Johnson, 21, of the 0-100 block of North Central Avenue, and Eddie R. Boens, 22, of the 5100 block of West Washington Boulevard, appeared before DuPage County Judge Susan Alvarado Friday afternoon.

Each is charged with one count of armed robbery and one count of possession of a stolen motor vehicle. Armed robbery, a felony, is punishable by six to 30 years in prison.

Authorities say that at 1:12 a.m. Thursday, police were called to the station at 6820 Route 53. The clerk, who was working alone, told them two men had entered the station, wearing gloves and covering most of their faces so only their eyes could be seen.

Johnson jumped over the counter while another man pointed what appeared to be handgun at the clerk and ordered the clerk to open the cash register. The weapon turned out to be a pellet gun.

The two took $300 to $400 in cash, plus about 30 cartons and 30 packs of cigarettes. They drove off in a vehicle that had been reported stolen in Chicago Wednesday, according to authorities.

Around 1:46 a.m., Burr Ridge police saw the vehicle at a gasoline station and tried to stop it. The vehicle crashed near 94th and Jackson streets in Burr Ridge, and the two men were arrested at 2:24 a.m.

Authorities now believe Boens was the driver of the car, staying in it during the robbery, and there is a third, unidentified accomplice.

Johnson and Boens are next due in court March 2.
