A Carol Stream man pleaded guilty Friday to killing someone while driving drunk.

Mario Gonzales pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol - causing death, for the Sept. 21, 2018, crash that killed 29-year-old Fredy Loyo.

Gonzales could be sentenced to up to 14 year in prison.

DuPage County Judge George Bakalis ruled Gonzales may remain free on bail while awaiting sentencing. Gonzales' next court date is Jan. 30.

Assistant State's Attorney Kristin Johnston told Bakalis that Gonzales had attended a party with relatives and friends the day before the crash and then went to a bar. The crash happened at 1:48 a.m. at Swift Road and Lake Street. Gonzales was driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck, and broadsided Loyo's Honda Accord, The impact sent the Accord spinning; it ended up wrapped around a telephone pole, trapping Loyo, Johnston said.

Gonzales' blood alcohol content was measured at .19, Johnston said. That's more than twice the legal threshold.
