Wheaton sets hearing on proposed marijuana sales ban

The Wheaton City Council will hold a public hearing this month on a proposed ban on recreational marijuana sales.

The forum, set for 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26, will give business leaders and residents a chance to debate an ordinance that would prohibit recreational cannabis retailers in the city. Legal marijuana use begins in Illinois in January, but several suburbs - from Naperville to Barrington to Bloomingdale - plan to keep dispensaries from setting up shop in their towns.

At the earliest, city council members could consider the ban at their meeting Tuesday, Sept. 3, and then issue a final vote on Monday, Sept. 16.
