Men accused of using counterfeit bills in Vernon Hills

Two men used counterfeit $100 bills at five businesses in Vernon Hills, the Lake County state's attorney's office said.

Filbert A. Elonge, 25, of the 2700 block of South Embers Lane in Arlington Heights and Vernon B. Taylor, 25, of the 6900 block of Cornell Avenue in Chicago each face felony forgery charges. If convicted, they could be sent to prison for two to five years.

Employees of a business on the 700 block of North Milwaukee Avenue told police a customer had attempted to use a fake $100 bill. The employees described the customer's car, which Vernon Hills police later stopped on Townline Road.

Officers said they found several receipts inside the vehicle from other transactions Elonge and Taylor had made, and police found additional fraudulent $100 bills at those businesses.

On Tuesday, Elonge was ordered held on $30,000 cash bond. His next court appearance is set for 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Taylor is being held on $20,000 cash bond and has a court appearance set for 9 a.m. Friday.
