Lake Zurich firefighters reunite ducklings with their mom

Firefighters rescued six ducklings from a sewer Thursday afternoon in Lake Zurich and reunited them with their mom in time for Mother's Day.

A resident called the fire department about 2:30 p.m. to report the ducklings were trapped in a sewer at 235 S. Rand Road near the Jewel-Osco, according to acting Lt. Brian Blaauw.

Firefighters removed one manhole cover and were able to reach five of the ducklings.

The sixth duckling had walked down a sewer pipe, Blaauw said, so firefighters had to remove a second manhole cover.

The ducklings' mother had a nest nearby, Blaauw said.

This is the second reported suburban duckling rescue in a week.

On Sunday, Elgin firefighters and police officers teamed up to rescue eight ducklings that had fallen into a sewer on the 1500 block of Randall Road.
