McCormick wins third term on Geneva school board, 2 union-backed newcomers elected
Geneva District 304 school board member Michael McCormick won a bid for a third term Tuesday night and voters selected two newcomers who were endorsed by the teacher's union.
Three, 4-year seats were available to the nine-candidate field, of which McCormick was the only incumbent.
According to unofficial results, McCormick was at the top with 1,684 votes with all precincts counted. Alicia Saxton tallied 1,462 votes for second place, and Robert L. Cabeen garnered 1,452 votes to finish third.
The Geneva Education Association, which represents teachers, endorsed Cabeen, Saxton and Katherine Frye in the race; Kelly Nowak and Mary Stith decided not to seek re-election.
Saxton, a former teacher, announced her candidacy at a union news conference at the end of the contentious teacher's strike in December. She also had organized a Facebook page supporting teachers during the strike.
Other candidates were Jessica Lynn Breugelmans, Kim Edwards, Al Gaston, Jill Johnson, and Prerak Patel.
