Batson, Hessel and Rooney re-elected in Libertyville-Vernon Hills 128

Three incumbents are headed back to the Libertyville-Vernon Hills Area High School District 128 board.

Board members James Batson, Lisa Hessel and Katherine "Casey" Rooney were leading Tuesday night for the three open seats, unofficial results showed.

Hessel led all vote-getters with 2,491 ballots cast. Rooney was in second with 2,149 votes. And Batson had 2,039 votes. Elizabeth Bruckner was in the fourth spot with 1,829. Challenger Loubna Kiliouine trailed with 1,022 votes.

Additionally, newcomer Don Carmichael was the lone candidate for a 2-year seat.

Provisional ballots and late-arriving mail-in ballots are not included.

The contested District 128 race was a mellow one this cycle, without the mudslinging that has stained previous electoral contests in the district.

Many of the candidates were focused on an upcoming $30.3 million expansion and renovation project that will affect both the Vernon Hills High and Libertyville High campuses.

They also talked about the need to maintain the high quality of education at both schools, which have been recognized as among the best public high schools in the state and nation.

District 128 serves some or all of Libertyville, Vernon Hills, Green Oaks, Mundelein, Rondout and Mettawa, as well as nearby unincorporated areas.
