Former DuPage sheriff's official dies two days before trial on misconduct charges

A former longtime dispatch supervisor in the DuPage County sheriff's office, charged in 2017 with official misconduct and public indecency, died last week, two days before his trial was set to commence.

Former communication supervisor Gregg Hanyzeski, 52, of Naperville was set to begin a bench trial before Judge Robert Miller on March 28. On March 27, his attorneys sought an "abatement of cause" and had the case continued to May 1.

According to DuPage County coroner officials and an online obituary, Hanyzeski "passed away suddenly" on March 26, at his Naperville home. Coroner's officials said Sunday that the death investigation is pending and test results could take up to six weeks before cause of death is determined.

A DuPage County law enforcement source said Sunday that a family member found him Tuesday at his home and that there were no signs of foul play or suicide.

A GoFundMe account set up to handle his funeral expenses states Hanyzeski "died unexpectedly of a previously undiagnosed congenital heart condition."

Hanyzeski, a 17-year-veteran of the department, was fired Nov. 30, 2017, after female underlings complained about him exposing himself and masturbating in the dispatch center.

A criminal investigation was launched and the ensuing indictment states thee activity took place on more than occasion "on or between May 1, 2017, and Nov. 30, 2017."

Hanyzeski turned himself into Warrenville police in December 2017 and was then freed after posting $1,000 bond. He pleaded not guilty to the charges March 5, 2018.

A visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Monday, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 1500 Brookdale Road, Naperville. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 a.m., and he will buried at SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery in Naperville.
