Driver suffers life-threatening injuries in Route 53 wreck

A Rockford man suffered life-threatening injuries in an early-morning crash Tuesday on Route 53 in Schaumburg that snarled traffic for hours, according to Illinois State Police.

State police said they were summoned at 5:27 a.m. after a 52-year-old Palatine man driving a 2008 Chevrolet Express in the far-right southbound express lane crashed into a 2006 Volkswagen Touareg stopped on the roadway without lights on.

Authorities said the Volkswagen's driver, a 36-year-old Rockford man, and the Palatine resident were taken to hospitals. They said the Rockford man suffered life-threatening injuries.

Police barricaded Route 53's southbound express lanes between Golf and Woodfield roads while investigating the crash. Southbound traffic was backed up to Dundee Road and sent drivers scrambling for alternate routes through the Northwest suburbs.

Police reopened the three southbound express lanes at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
