Lake in the Hills man charged after six-hour standoff with police

A 27-year-old man threatened police with a weapon and locked himself in his home for almost six hours Friday, according to a news release from the Lake in the Hills Police Department.

Police responded to a report of an intoxicated subject on the 100 block of Harvest Gate around 4:07 p.m., the release said.

Police made contact with the man, Garrett C. Kowalczyk, who threatened them with an undisplayed weapon and went back into the home, according to the release.

With the assistance of McHenry County SWAT and a number of other police departments, Kowalczyk was taken into custody around 10 p.m., the release said.

Nobody was injured and there were no weapons found inside the home, according to the release.

Kowalczyk was charged with threatening a public official, aggravated assault, resisting or obstructing a peace officer and criminal damage to property, according to the release.
