Police, Walmart team up to bring 50 kids a merry holiday

Vernon Hills and Lincolnshire police departments teamed up Saturday to host their third annual Cops and Kids event.

Fifty deserving youths were treated to a luncheon at the Vernon Hills Police Department where they met with Santa and received a gift bag.

The kid were then bused to Walmart, where they each went on a $100 shopping spree with a police officer.

"They're very happy about it. They love it. They were very surprised when we told them they were each getting $100," said Vernon Hills Police Cmdr. Vince Utter.

School Resource Officer John Paret worked with area schools in Lincolnshire and Vernon Hills to pick out the neediest children to participate in the event. Most of the expenses for thewere covered through a Walmart Foundation grant.
