Milton Twp. trustee fills state Senate seat in wake of Nybo's resignation

The first Indian-American to serve in the state Senate, Yadav "Nick" Nathwani, was sworn in Tuesday to fill the remaining term of former Republican state Sen. Chris Nybo of Elmhurst, who resigned Nov. 15.

Nathwani, a 35-year-old Milton Township trustee, will represent the 24th District until Jan. 9, when Democrat Suzie Glowiak, who defeated Nybo on Nov. 6, will be sworn in.

In all, Nathwani likely will not serve more than five actual days in Springfield.

"It is vitally important the 24th District has a voice and a representative in these final weeks when important votes are being taken," Nathwani said in a written statement. "While my time in the Senate is limited, I am fully dedicated to addressing constituent issues, advocating for better government policies, and most importantly, serving the interests of our communities."

Nybo quietly resigned on Nov. 15 in an email to DuPage County Republican Chairman Brian Krajewski and Senate Republican Leader Bill Brady. In his email, Nybo suggested a member of his staff fill the seat.

"As we discussed, I am resigning from the Illinois State Senate. I believe that my district director, Laura Fitzpatrick, could more than capably serve the remainder of my term and assist with winding down our office operations," Nybo wrote. "I appreciate that you also share that belief, and that you have agreed to support her appointment to serve the remainder of my term."

Both Nybo and Fitzpatrick declined to comment Tuesday on Nathwani's appointment and the apparent change in plans.

"Yadav will be a great state Senator for the 24th District during the upcoming veto session," Krajewski said in a written statement Tuesday. "As a Milton Township trustee, Yadav knows the difficult issues facing West suburban residents."

Nybo, an attorney from Elmhurst, served in the state Senate since 2014 after stints in the Illinois House and on the Elmhurst City Council.

The 24th District covers all or parts of Clarendon Hills, Darien, Downers Grove, Elmhurst, Glen Ellyn, Hinsdale, Lisle, Lombard, Oak Brook, Oakbrook Terrace, Villa Park, Westmont, Wheaton and Willowbrook.
