Head to Vernon Hills for the Worldwide Day of Play Sept. 15

Local children are invited to put down their electronic devices and head outside for some "unplugged" fun when the Vernon Hills Park District hosts its annual Worldwide Day of Play event on Saturday, Sept. 15.

Festivities are planned for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Century Park Pavilion, 1400 Indianwood Drive, Vernon Hills.

The idea for a Worldwide Day of Play was originated by the cable television station Nickelodeon in 2005, to encourage children and their families to take some time away from the television and play outdoors.

The Vernon Hills Park District has taken that idea to heart, providing an annual day of family-friendly outdoor activities.

Park district staff will lead participants in old-fashioned picnic games, like sack races, hula hoop contests, and an egg toss.

No registration is necessary. The event will be canceled in the case of inclement weather.
