Former home health aide sentenced for stealing from clients in their 70s
A home health care aide who worked for a Schaumburg couple pleaded guilty to financial exploitation of an elderly person in exchange for a jail sentence and two years probation, court records show.
Sheila Aleluya, 45, of Hoffman Estates, was also ordered to serve 166 days in Cook County jail, perform 100 hours of community service and pay $1,649 in fines according to court records. Aleluya was also ordered to have no contact with the victims.
Prosecutors say Aleluya - who worked three days a week for the couple in their 70s, since December 2016 - stole money, jewelry and other items from the house.
The couple informed the home care agency that employed Aleluya about the missing items in March, prosecutors said. The victims and the agency informed Schaumburg police who learned some missing items had been pawned. A pawnshop employee supplied police information that led them to Aleluya, prosecutors said.
Aleluya subsequently told police she used the money to pay off debts here and in the Philippines.
