Students see changes at District 54 schools as classes resume

Students returned from summer break Monday at all 28 of Schaumburg Township Elementary District 54's schools.

Among the changes welcoming returning students at some schools were eight new classrooms at Dirksen Elementary School and six new classrooms and an expanded gym at Churchill Elementary School, both in Schaumburg.

Elk Grove Village police assigned a school resource officer for students at the village's three District 54 schools - Link, Stevenson and Mead Junior High - following a 14-year hiatus. Meanwhile, officials in Schaumburg, where the highest concentration of the district's schools lies, recently recommended adding a second such officer.

Other changes students will become more familiar with this fall are the establishment of Makerspaces - collaborative work spaces for making things and learning - at all of District 54's elementary schools.
