Police: Algonquin man pulled gun on employees during car dealership dispute

An Algonquin man apparently upset over the service a vehicle received at a Crystal Lake auto dealership pulled a gun on its employees Saturday, but did not fire any bullets, police said Monday.

Djordje Maretic, 23, of the 2100 block of Tahoe Parkway, is charged with aggravated assault and disorderly conduct stemming from the altercation at Volkswagen of Crystal Lake, according to police. The assault charge is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail.

According to Crystal Lake police, officers were called to the dealership at 5213 Northwest Highway about 2:50 p.m. Saturday for a report of a person with a gun. By the time they arrived, the person with a gun had fled the business, police said.

Officers later learned that a dispute had taken place between management and customers over the servicing of a vehicle. During the argument, police said, a passenger of the vehicle pulled a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at employees.

Using a description provided by employees, officers located the vehicle a short time later and arrested Maretic.

Brian Nowak, 23, of Algonquin

The car's driver, Brian Nowak, 23, of the 600 block of Claymont Court in Algonquin, also was arrested and charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct, police said.

Both Maretic and Nowak were released after posting bond. Information about their court dates was not available Monday.

Crystal Lake police continue to investigate and say a second passenger in the vehicle at the dealership has not yet been identified. Anyone with information is asked to call the Crystal Lake Police Department at (815) 356-3620 or Crime Stoppers at (800) 762-STOP (7867).
