Roselle picks 2018 Rose Queen

Joie Allen was crowned Roselle's 2018 Rose Queen in the 59th annual competition last week at Lake Park High School's west campus.

Four other young women also captured honors: first runner-up Nicolette Pilalis and academic scholarship winners Rahi Patel, Noelle Nelson and Faith Adcock.

Allen won the crown and a $2,000 scholarship in a field that featured 10 competitors. Pilalis took home a $1,000 scholarship, and the three others each won $250 scholarships.

The competition was open to female high school students who live in Roselle and/or attend Lake Park. The program is funded by the village, area businesses and proceeds from ticket sales.

The other competitors were Aubrey Cameron, Julianna Crocilla, Sydnie Shay, Kajol Topiwali and Nicole Walderbach.

The competition began with written essays and personal interviews and culminated with four events:

• Community Connection, which gave each contestant the chance to wear an outfit reflecting their personality while emcees read a brief essay about their connection to the community.

• A talent competition.

• A formalwear segment where the girls were escorted on stage by someone they admire.

• A randomly asked question.
