Worker rescued from trench in Mount Prospect

Firefighters helped rescue a man trapped in a construction trench Wednesday afternoon outside a Mount Prospect home.

The man, who was working on a sewer line in front of the house, became trapped about waist-deep in soil that caved in on him, according to a fire official. He freed himself from the trench about 25 minutes after rescue crews received the call and was taken to the hospital in stable condition, according to reports.

Mount Prospect firefighters responded to the 800 block of South Elm Street at 3:41 p.m. Wednesday and found the man trapped in a trench approximately 8 to 10 feet deep, the Mount Prospect Fire Department said in a news release.

Firefighters moved dirt from the hole back to the edge of the hole to prevent another cave-in, and the man was able to pull himself out while crews were preparing to rescue him, a fire official explained.

Last week, a Gurnee man died while working in a sewer line in Streamwood. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating that case.
