Fire damages uninhabited West Chicago house

A fire damaged a kitchen of an uninhabited house in West Chicago Thursday evening, fire officials said.

A neighbor called firefighters to the two-story, single-family home in the 900 block of Gates Street at 5:30 p.m., West Chicago Lt. Jason Day said.

Nobody was in the home at the time, and nobody was injured while extinguishing the blaze, he said.

"There was damage to the structure, mainly to the kitchen area and some windows (broken) for ventilation," he said.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined, and no damage estimates were available. Wheaton, Winfield, Carol Stream and Warrenville fire departments assisted.
