Naturalist Muir 'to speak' at Geneva History Center

We're half a month away from the start of meteorological spring.

After the winter we've had, despite the lovely weather a bit ago, we're all probably looking for fun activities outside the house.

While we wait, it's time to shake off cabin fever and get out of the house.

John Muir portrayal: The "Father of Yosemite" will speak, so to speak, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21 at the Geneva History Center, 113 S. Third St.

Actor John Wallace will portray environmentalist John Muir. Muir was known as the Father of Yosemite, working on behalf of American wilderness his whole life. He provided his expertise to poets, painters and presidents. In fact, his discussions with President Theodore Roosevelt inspired the beginnings of the country's national park system and the creation of Yosemite National Park. Muir also is known as the founder of the Sierra Club.

Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students and center members. Admission also includes entrance to the center's new exhibit, "Americans Who Tell the Truth."

For information, people may contact Executive Director Dave Oberg, 232-4951, or visit www.genevahistorycenter.org.

Pasta for posies: Help those flowers bloom and get dinner at the same time. The third annual Pasta for Posies spaghetti supper will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. March 4, at Riverview Banquets on Route 25 in Batavia, one-third mile south of Fabyan Parkway. Because of limited parking, organizers encourage carpooling.

Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children 10 and younger. Besides dinner, the evening features a talk by gardening expert Mary Stavenhagen and a quilt raffle.

Monies raised help the Geneva Beautification Committee acquire plants and materials to beautify downtown Geneva.

Tickets are available at Farmers Insurance, 316 W. State St.; Geneva Chamber of Commerce, 8 S. Third St.; Geneva History Center, 113 S. Third St.; the Olive Mill, 315 James St.; and Viking Office Supply, 124 W. State St.

Calling all Juliets: The fourth annual Juliets Weekend is set for March 6 to 8. The annual girls' weekend is geared to women of all ages, to shop, see a fashion show and just have a lot of fun in downtown Geneva.

The weekend kicks off March 6 with a reception at Village Verone, with live entertainment, socializing and a chance to meet Geneva merchants.

Cost is $35 and includes a Juliets (which stands for Just Us Ladies Eating Together and Shopping) Rewards Card, with exclusive rewards and discounts at participating merchants; a shopping tote; the reception; a fashion show; merchant-sponsored events and chances to win prizes at participating businesses and a downtown Geneva shopping spree.

Information is available by calling 630-232-4417 or visiting www.genevadowntown.org/juliets.html

Bear-y interesting: And while just about everyone knows the story of the Three Bears, a different tale is told at the Three Bears exhibit at Peck Farm Park. The traveling exhibit opened Saturday and will be at the farm through March 7.

Participants will learn about three bears, naturally - the black bear, the grizzly bear and the polar bear - and their habitats, through life-size two-dimensional paintings of each bear; life-size silhouettes; skulls; foot casts and more.

The suggested donation is $1 a person. The exhibit is in the Peck Farm Park orientation barn. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays.
