Teacher gets a supplies surprise
Lions Park School second-grade teacher Julie Vowinkel received $1,000 worth of school supplies, including a digital camera and pencil sharpener, from Office Max last week. Local Office Max stores have honored about 1,200 teachers like Vowinkel across the county with supplies in what the company is calling "A Day Made Better" initiative through the office supply store and nonprofit organization, Adopt-A- Classroom.
New library trustee: The Mount Prospect Library board appointed Sylvia Hass to fill the vacancy of Charles Fuller, who recently stepped down. Hass and her husband George, have lived in the village since 2001. Their daughter goes to St. Raymond elementary school in Mount Prospect, library officials said.
Just don't go there: Central Road railroad crossing will be completely closed by Union Pacific Railroad to vehicular and pedestrian traffic until Sunday, Oct. 19.
The official detour route for westbound traffic is Route 83 south to Golf Road and then west to Arlington Heights Road and then north back to Central Road. It will be the reverse for eastbound traffic.

Fifteen parks in the Chicago area will compete to win $25,000 for park improvements and a winner's celebration featuring the Bears' star Adewale Ogunleye at Soldier Field.
