Capannari parties to celebrate honor

The TV show "Good Morning America" has named Capannari Ice Cream in Mount Prospect as one of the nation's top ice cream shops.

In honor of the award, Capannari Ice Cream is inviting everyone to a Top 10 party this month at 3 p.m. June 29 at the store, 10 S. Pine.

The store will have a concert in the park, baggo, facepainting and tattoos for the kids, moonwalk and ice cream eating contest.

Police academy wants you: The Mount Prospect Police Department is accepting applications for the Citizens Police Academy.

The academy is open to any village resident, at least 18 years old and free of any criminal history.

The academy will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. for 11 consecutive Tuesdays, July 15 through Sept. 23, at the police department, 112 E. Northwest Hwy.

The academy will allow citizens to get a firsthand look at police operations and give them the opportunity to experience police work from the officers' point of view.

Topics include traffic enforcement, self-defense, field training and criminal law. Academy students will also be allowed to make simulated traffic stops and arrests.

The highlight of the academy is the evening when students get to use the department's pistol range.

Applications are available at the police department and must be turned in by 9 a.m. June 30.

July 4 parade: The Prospect Heights annual Independence Day Parade begins at 9 a.m. July 4.

Parade participants assemble at the Prospect Crossing Shopping Center, near the southeast corner of Rand and Willow roads. The parade will go east down Willow, finishing at the St. Alphonsus Church parking lot, north of Willow and Wheeling roads.

Parts of Schoenbeck, Elmhurst and Wheeling roads will be closed for a period of time for the parade.

The first 100 registered parade participants who decorate their bikes will receive a T-shirt to wear in the parade. To get a spot, pick one up at the Gary Morava Center, 110 S. Camp McDonald Road.
