Explore a French city at talk, photo show

In a joint effort, the Hoffman Estates Arts, Celebrations and Sister Cities Commissions will present "Destination: Versailles," with an invitation to explore the outstanding French city.

Lee Krizka of the arts commission, Bev Romanoff of the celebrations commission, and Marcia Franks and Sharon Kimble of the sister cities commission collaborated on the program. The community is invited to attend from 1 to 3 p.m. May 3 in Room 105 of the Hoffman Estates Park District Community Center and Ice Arena, 1685 W. Higgins Road.

Speaker Kathleen Skolnik, an adjunct faculty member of the department of art history of Chicago's Roosevelt University, will show highlights of Versailles with a presentation featuring photography.

Skolnik is a past contributor to the Chicago Architects Oral History Project of the Architecture Department at the Art Institute of Chicago, and writes articles for the magazine of the Art Deco Society of Chicago. She collaborated with Dr. Robert Bruegmann of the University of Illinois at Chicago on a book concerning the late Chicago architect Harry Weese.

The arts commission is the recipient of the Illinois Arts Friendly Community Award from the Illinois Arts Alliance and the Illinois Municipal League, in recognition of achievement for using a community model of how mayors and leaders work with artists, art organizers and volunteers to improve the quality of life for residents. The award comes with the right to use the designation "An Illinois Arts Friendly Community." Call the village at (847) 781-2606.

Science fair: Hoffman Estates resident Donna Boomgarden invites the community to a science fair from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hoover Elementary School, 315 Springinsguth Road, Schaumburg.

Children of both villages attend Hoover according to Boomgarden, who said nearly 50 students would participate in the fair.

Parents may see their children's works from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. that day. State Rep. Fred Crespo will present awards at 7 p.m. Earlier, Crespo and Hoffman Estates Trustee Jackie Green will judge the entries.

"My children, Sarah, in fifth grade, and Jacob, first grade, are working together on a project about electricity. They will make batteries from lemons, potatoes and other items not usually thought of as having electrical powers," Boomgarden said.

Earth Day celebration: Singing and dancing by the talented third- and fourth-graders of St. Hubert Catholic School will usher in Earth Day for parents and the community.

Officially, Earth Day is Tuesday, but students will commemorate the event at noon today in the multi-purpose room of the school, located at Flagstaff Lane and Grand Canyon St. in Hoffman Estates.

Principal Vito DeFrisco and Assistant Principal Alison O'Connor will also host open registration for the next school year through 3 p.m.

"We will arrange a tour for newcomers any time, or accept appointments," O'Connor said. "Our curriculum strives to develop students spiritually, academically, physically and socially." Call (847) 885-7702.
