Salon hits nail on the head with manicures

Last weekend, I decided to stop in for a quick manicure at a place I'd never been before. Because I'd seen a coupon in a local mailing for Polished Nail Salon & Boutique, I thought I'd give it a try.

Stepping inside the shop at 47 N. Bothwell St., in downtown Palatine was such an enjoyable experience, I wanted to recommend it to anyone looking for a new place to get their nails done.

When I walked in, I was blown away by how cute the space was -- bright colored walls with hand-painted murals, tons of natural light and cheerful music playing.

The store opened in late August at the ground floor of the massive Hummel building.

The shop has been open since the end of summer, but as I chatted with owner Dahlia Fazioli, I realized that people are just starting to learn about the place. As if getting a manicure or pedicure isn't enough fun, they also sell jewelry and clothes.

They also offer facials, massages and waxing. And their regular manicure could just be the best you've ever had.

New sushi spot: A new sushi restaurant has opened in Palatine and saying the name of it could be just as fun as the meal! It's called Rock 'n' Roll Sushi and is at 710 W. Euclid Ave., in the former Sushi Ai spot. It's run by Chef Ho Kyong Pak, who provides traditional sushi fare as well as some unique dishes like the Crunchy Muffy, Scary Spider Roll, Tornado Sunrise or even the Dirty Old Man. Music is a big inspiration to the eatery. The restaurant has an Asian-American fusion menu, combining high-end sushi and a hip atmosphere. Pak brings 25 years of experience in the sushi business, including opening Japanese restaurants Wildfish, Swordfish and Starfish. Go to www.loverocknrollsushi.com for information.

Need help packing? The best thing about going on vacation is getting out of town and seeing beautiful places. The worst part? Packing. If you agree, head to the Palatine Public Library Feb. 21 for a seminar called "Pack Like a Pro." The event is at 7 p.m. and is being put on by Al Popowits, who has been making annual trips to Europe for years.

The program will give secrets to packing light. As a tourist, you can comfortably enjoy up to three weeks of travel with only a 22-inch rolling carry-on bag and one smaller briefcase sized-piece of hand luggage, he says.

You'll also learn what to take with and what to leave at home. Register online at www.palatinelibrary.org or call (847) 358-5881, ext. 167.

Drop in for hockey: Hat Trick Hockey at 647 Consumers Ave. in Palatine will be hosting a drop-in hockey day for inline skaters on Presidents Day, Monday. It's from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and costs $5. Bring your own equipment and play on skate or on foot. Call (630) 774-3057 with questions.
