Schaumburg police support Special Olympics with 'Cop in the Lot'

With most in-person fundraisers for Special Olympics Illinois and its Law Enforcement Torch Run canceled by the pandemic this year, agencies like the Schaumburg Police Department are innovating new and COVID-appropriate ways for people to donate.

One of them is the "Cop in the Lot" event going on from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, in the parking lot of the department's headquarters, 1000 W. Schaumburg Road.

"Cop in the Lot" is designed to be a family-friendly, drive-through event featuring cars on display and appearances by costumed characters such as Judy Hopps from the Disney film "Zootopia" and McGruff the Crime Dog.

Attendees will remain in their cars as they drive through and are required to wear face coverings during their visit.

Police department staff and volunteers also will be adhering to social distancing protocols as they accept cash donations from attendees.
