Endorsement: Garrett, Haring, Massa and Morley for Des Plaines Elementary School District 62

This endorsement is a consensus opinion of the Daily Herald Editorial Board.

The five candidates running for four seats on the Des Plaines Elementary School District 62 Board Of Education have more similarities than differences. During a joint online interview with the Daily Herald, incumbents Tina Garrett, Elizabeth Massa and Beth Morley and challenger Gene Haring stated their opposition to the banning or removal of books that address racial or LGBTQ issues from classrooms. Challenger Patrick Maag did not attend the interview but in an email stated he also opposes such censorship. All are in favor of finding a way to implement full-day kindergarten.

Garrett, a board member since 2017, expressed concerns about officials buying into sales pitches for curriculum and programs that don't work, and believes one role of the board is to protect student learning from changing political whims. Haring, who works in marketing and public relations, wants to improve communication within the district and continue what he says is the excellent work of the current school board.

Maag, a teacher in Hinsdale Township High School District 86, wants to bring his educational experience to his home district, stating inclusivity and equity are important issues for him.

Massa, who was appointed to the board in 2021, is a former teacher; she would like to see more support staff in classrooms and continued integrated social-emotional support for students.

Morley, a board member since 2015, would like to see through the development of a new strategic plan.

The three incumbents deserve another term, and although either challenger would be a good fit, we give the nod to Haring's longtime connections in the Des Plaines community. Garrett, Haring, Massa and Morley are endorsed.
