Endorsement: Kevin Morrison for Cook County Board Dist. 15

This endorsement is a consensus opinion of the Daily Herald Editorial Board.

Kevin Morrison is seeking his second term representing the 15th District on the Cook County Board - which touches pieces of Des Plaines, Mount Prospect, Elk Grove Village, Schaumburg, Hanover Park, Elgin and the Barringtons - and he's facing Republican Chuck Cerniglia, an owner of a shipping and mailing business who's running for elected office for the first time.

Morrison is touting his efforts to help small businesses in his district, his work on the forest preserves and what sounds so far like an impressive effort to establish a department on mental and behavioral health. Cerniglia agrees mental health services are needed in the county, but he also says simply, "it all starts in the home, too."

Morrison supports expanding what's been called an assault weapons ban throughout the state. Cerniglia argues gun restrictions would not have stopped tragedies like the Highland Park shooting, saying "the politicians are posturing," but he sees a flawed system.

Meanwhile, it was not encouraging to hear Cerniglia, when asked about providing food and water to migrants arriving in Cook County from Texas, answer that "they looked fine to me."

Overall, Cerniglia is short on ideas and sometimes presents extreme views, while Morrison is long on ideas and showing results of hard work so far. Morrison is endorsed.
