Driven by fear

Republican consultant Mike Murphy is of the opinion that 30 GOP senators would vote to impeach President Donald Trump if they could keep their votes secret. When this comment was passed on to former Arizona GOP Senator, Jeff Flake, he said, "I heard someone say if there were a private vote on impeachment in the Senate, there would be 30 Republican votes. That's not true. There would be at least 35."

Since very few people think that the Senate will get the needed 20 Republican votes for impeachment means these Republican senators consider getting reelected is more important than doing what, in my opinion, is right and best for the country. Or as Washington Post columnist Megan McArdle put it (paraphrasing), conservative Republican politicians who are not "enamored" with Trump still support him because they are afraid of him.

What a truly sad state of affairs for this country to be in.

My wish for Jeff Flake is that he runs in the Republican primaries in states that still have them and when he loses, as he inevitably will, run in the general election as a third-party candidate for president campaigning extensively in the Red states.

If I should win the Mega Millions or Powerball lottery, I would give Mr. Flake the ticket so he could finance his campaign if he would do as I suggest above.

Full disclosure: If every person were as independent a voter as I am, it would not matter how legislative districts were drawn.
