Look at his record, not his words

In endorsing Peter Roskam for Congress, the Daily Herald was reassured by his "inclination to act as a check on the president's more troubling impulses." There is little to be reassured by. Sternly worded news releases do not resistance make.

The most glancing review of the record shows Roskam is one of Trump's top 10 supporters in Congress, voting with the president over 94 percent of the time. His protests to the contrary are mere fig leaves, attempting to mask the Trump loyalist he has actually become. His support for CHIP funding does nothing to undo his repeated votes to deprive 30,000 of his constituents of health insurance. His support for Great Lakes funding does not change his stark history of climate change denial. His vote against concealed carry permits across state lines pales in comparison to his 93 percent rating from the NRA.

The people of the 6th District overwhelmingly want a representative who will be a responsible check and balance on the president. That man is Sean Casten. Casten will work with Republicans when it is good for Illinois and stand up to Trump when it is good for the country.

That is the sort of rational, reasonable leadership the voters of this district demand. Actions speak louder than words, and Roskam's record shows you right where he stands: lined up tightly behind Trump and way out of step with the district. We need a change. We need Sean Casten.
