Central option needed for recycling
In the Opinion Section of April 30, there was an article entitled "Lifestyle changes aren't answer on plastics," and I wanted to comment on recycling in general.
In DuPage County, they eliminated the recycling center off Fullerton in Carol Stream. No reason given. Yet it provided a service to several contractors who tossed cardboard boxes for recycling rather than in the dumpster.
As for myself and living in an apartment which does not offer a recycling option and being an avid recycler, this was my only outlet to recycle newspapers, metal cans, plastics, cardboard and newspapers. Now what used to be recycled is tossed in a dumpster.
Yet, to me there really needs to be a single place where items to be recycled. Currently the nearest paper, metal cans and plastic are in Elgin. The cost of fuel makes this option not viable. But to recycle other items - batteries, plastic bags, electronics, paint, medications - one must go to several different locations.
What is not available at all is the proper disposal of sharps, so they go into the trash. I know that in Florida one is allowed to fill an old milk container with sharps and take them to a local fire department.
