Dist. 57 should fight TIF extensions to get more money
I admit I am not an expert, and admit I have not followed the downtown TIF district subject closely. I also admit I am not in District 57, or entirely understand how property taxes are dispersed to the schools.
After the mayor wrote a letter to the editor the other day in support of a tax increase for District 57, I need to ask: Why doesn't District 57 follow District 214 with a lawsuit of their own against the city for passing another extension of the TIF district?
These properties have received tax breaks since 1985, and stand to continue getting these breaks until 2040.
The proper and fair taxes collected from the properties the city leaders protect in the name of development might eliminate the need for the tax increase.
