Right message, wrong means

I strongly agree with protests against racially discriminatory practices and police abuse of anyone. I cannot agree with the NFL players' means of protest. Kneeling was used as peaceful resistance to police during protests of the '60's.

It does not have the same effect during the national anthem. It is weak because it impedes nothing. It is counter-productive because it insults hundreds of thousands of people who have died for the cause of freedom.

It raises righteous anger toward the athletes. It seems similar to childish foot-stomping and breath-holding. NFL players can afford to pay for messages on TV, radio, magazines and newspapers that would be much more effective. The media is the best avenue of protest. If the players are not willing to donate money for the cause, then how sincere are they? They should stand up during the national anthem, express protest by intelligent means and work to make this country what it should be.
