West Chicago regulates short-term home rentals

West Chicago has started to enforce regulations on short-term vacation home rentals through services like Airbnb and VRBO.

Residents who want to offer their single-family detached home for short-term rentals are required to register with the city. They must also obtain an annual license.

The registration cost is $50. Proof of ownership via a deed must be presented to the community development department at city hall, 475 Main St.

Out of deference to neighbors, townhouses and duplexes owners are only eligible for short-term rentals by first seeking approval from the city council via a special use permit. Apartments and condominiums are not allowed.

Other restrictions include a minimum of three-day rentals and a maximum of 30 days. Homeowners must reside in their residence at least 183 days out of the year. All other rules and regulations for short-term home rentals can be found within the registration form.

The city council approved the ordinance on regulating short-term rentals last month. The local law is expected to be reevaluated next year.
